Winnipeg

Winnipeg, capital of the province of Manitoba, is the city where the largest concentration of French Canadians can be found west of the Great Lakes. What a pleasant surprise it was for us to discover that Winnipeg offers so many opportunities for walking. Our steps took us from The Forks (a district of great historical importance located at the junction of the Red River and the Assiniboine River), to the Esplanade Riel (pedestrian bridge), in the streets of St-Boniface (the French district) as well as in the gardens of the Assiniboine Park. As the voyageurs did, we canoed on the Red River and stopped at Fort Gibraltar, a North West Company fur trade post. Our stay ended in a grandiose way by visiting three pavilions (Ireland, Brazil and Poland) of Folklorama, a two-week long festival celebrating Winnipeg's multi-culturalism. Our stay was most memorable! We still wonder why we waited so long to visit Winnipeg and are looking forward to our next visit to discover it even further!
