The beaches named Porcupine Strands (approximately 56 km long) are thought to be those described by the Vikings at the time of their voyages in Markland (Labrador). The Vikings could see these beaches far in the distance and used them as benchmarks in their navigation towards their southern colonies. In their sagas, the Vikings referred to them under the name of Wonderstrands.
